My brother-in-law and future sister-in-law gave my husband and I the perfect Christmas gift for a new food blogger…a gift card to a restaurant I have yet to try. What made this even better is that they had already checked it out and gave me a recommendation of what to order (very cool that their gift came with a little less research work for me)! So my husband and I were off on a new tasty taco adventure.
The Velvet Taco is right off 75 and was in a convenient location with plenty of parking. It is a trendy place, with many young people stopping in on their lunch breaks. It’s got community seating and outdoor seating. You have a choice of sitting at huge picnic tables or you can choose to sit at bar seating like we did for a more private feel. We wasted no time when we got there and ordered about 3 x’s the food of everyone else. Sure we could have ordered a taco or two each, but would that have really been as much fun?
We worked our ways through the tacos and decided that my sister-in-law was right. The best choice is the #20 Grilled flank steak, egg, herb goat cheese potatoes, arugula, pico, on a flour tortilla for $3.25. There are so many wonderful ingredients, the steak is so tender, and the goat cheese adds something special. So if you can only fit one taco in your stomach…get this one.
It’s important to note that the tacos here are not traditional Tex-Mex tacos. You should be prepared for this and I should have done a better job preparing Danny, as I think he was a tad bit disappointed at first. He quickly turned around when he got ahold of the amazing fountain drink selection of non-mainstream, sometimes organic drink choices. He was in soda heaven! No kidding, he drank 4 different drinks during the course of our lunch. He also liked their Creamsicle Tea. If you like orange flavors, you’ll like this tea. I was not a fan; however, but I’m not a huge fan of orange flavoring.
Danny ordered a side of Roasted Potatoes and he really enjoyed them. They had a little too much lemon on there for my taste and I was satisfied with just one bite. I kept eyeing the Rotisserie corn side that other restaurant goers were nibbling on which looked fantastic and seemed to be a popular choice.
What to Order at the Velvet Taco:
1. #20 Grilled flank steak, egg, herb goat cheese potatoes, arugula, pico, on a flour tortilla. (Note that this comes with an egg that’s in the shape of your tortilla and if you are hauling this taco long distances, you may want to order it sans egg, as it would get cold. Nobody wants a cold egg).
2. #11 Grilled flank steak, portobello, white queso, red onion, mex-oregano, corn tortilla. (Danny’s favorite, said he would get this one every time)
3. #1 Rotisserie chicken, queso fresco, onion chutney, pickled Fresnos, pea tendrils, corn tortilla.
4. For the non-adventurous orderer, or for a safe bet that’s a little more like regular Mexican tacos: #2 Rotisserie chicken, white queso, roast corn pico, cilantro, smoked poblano salsa, corn tortilla.
And go in and experiment with the delicious, unique tastes of the soda fountain.
